CHIAPAS, Mexico – Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez made the most of his first start for Mexico in almost a year as he scored an early goal for El Tri that helped defeat Honduras 2-0 on Thursday night. Chicharito’s goal was his 37th scored for El Tri and the victory marked the first time Mexico has defeated Honduras in over five years.

Chicharito scored in the 21st minute after receiving a terrific assist from fellow striker, Oribe Peralta. With the goal Chicharito is now two goals shy of tying Cuahtemoc Blanco for second place on Mexico’s all time leading scorer list. Jared Borgetti is the current record holder with over 46 goals tallied while playing for El Tri.

Newcomer, Oswaldo Alanis, scored the second goal for Mexico in the 36th minute off of a terrific set piece. Marco Fabian took the corner kick and placed it perfectly in front of the net for Alanis to head in easily.

Mexico has played well in international friendlies since getting their heart broken in Brazil. Since their gut-wrenching loss to the Netherlands, Mexico has gone undefeated in three contests, including two victories over Bolivia and Honduras.

Mexican goalkeeper, Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa, captained El Tri during the match and showed no signs of rust after not having played goalie in over a month as he has been benched for his Spanish club team Malaga. Memo and the Mexican defense kept another clean sheet and now have held their opposition scoreless in three consecutive matches.

Next up for Mexico is Panama on Sunday in Queretaro where they will try and continue their hot streak. Honduras, who suffered another disappointing loss, will look to rebound next Tuesday against the United States in Boca Raton, Florida.
