Alejandro González Iñárritu and Emmanuel Lubezki triumphed at last night’s Oscars with “Birdman” and Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto congratulated them profusely via Twitter saying, “Congratulations Emmanuel Lubezki for that well-deserved Oscar! His cinematographic work in “Birdman” is extraordinary.” Later, when Iñárritu won the biggest honors of the night, Peña Nieto congratulated the director, “Alejandro González Iñárritu, what a well deserved recognition to your work and talent. Congratulations! Mexico celebrates this with you.” But after Iñárritu’s powerful speech, where he said he prays for Mexico “to find and build the government we deserve,” it was Mexico’s governing political party, PRI, that responded on their Twitter page by saying, “Agreeing with Mexican pride, it is a fact that, more than deserving it, we are building a better government. Congratulations #GonzálezIñárritu.”

Political and social issues seemed to be a common denominator in many of last night’s speeches, with artists taking advantage of the huge platform to shed light on the issues closest to their hearts. Of course, González Iñárritu’s speech was no exception. Congratulations from the President were not only expected but also almost obligatory; but the statement coming from the governing political party in Mexico, PRI, was much more of a response to his speech, since they know very well his words were specifically directed to them.
