NBA Breaking News: Five Teams That Could Sign Josh Smith [SLIDESHOW]

Five Teams That Could Sign Josh Smith

In a shocking move this morning, the Detroit Pistons released all star forward Josh Smith. Smith signed with the Detroit as a free agent last summer on a four year, $54 million dollar contract. However, he wasn’t even half way through that deal when President, general manager and head coach Stan Van Gundy said enough was enough and outright released Smith using the NBA’s stretch provision.

The Pistons tried to trade Smith in the offseason, but were unable to get a deal done with Smith’s sizeable contract. Rumors out of Detroit last week had the Pistons again shopping Smith, but it appears that no team was interested in absorbing his egregious contract.  it’s more than likely that Smith will clear waivers this week (meaning no team will sign him to take over his contract). That means Detroit will still have to pay Smith the remaining $28 million on his deal, but will be able to stretch that out over several years instead of two.

Once Smith clears waivers he will be free to sign with any team he chooses. With that said, let’s take a look at the five top candidates to sign Josh Smith.
