Google announced the heavily-leaked new Nexus 7 July 24 at a special "Breakfast with Sundar Pichai" event in San Francisco. The new mini-tablet runs the all-new Android 4.3 and totes a high-res 1920 x 1200 seven-inch display into a 7.6 mm and 0.3 inch thick body.

Being a mini tablet and having almost identical features the real competitor to this new tablet is Apple's own iPad Mini. But how do these two stack up against one another?

Let's take a look at the specifications.

Size and weight

The Google Nexus 7 tablet has a rectangular body and measures 200 x 114 x 8.65 mm, while the iPad mini features a more square-like build and is slightly slimmer than the Nexus 7 tablet coming in at 200 x 134.7 x 7.2mm. However, the iPad mini is a bit heavier being 312g compared to the Nexus 7's 290g weight.

Display

The Nexus 7 features a best-in-class full HD display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels. Making for a pixel density of 323ppi. The Nexus 7's screen trumps Apple's IPad mini display which is only 1,024 x 768 pixel display which comes to only 163ppi.

Storage and Memory

The Nexus 7 will be available in 16GB and 32GB models when it launches while the iPad mini comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The new Nexus 7 has 2GB of RAM on board and the iPad mini is thought to come with 512MB of memory. Both devices lack a card slot for storage expansion.

Processor

The second-generation Nexus 7 packs a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset clocked at 1.5GHz and complemented by Adreno 320 graphics. Apple's iPad Mini features a dual-core Apple A5 configuration, compromised of a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU. It isn't confirmed but it's believed that the iPad mini's A5 chip clocks in at 1GHz, which means the Nexus 7 has the advantage here in terms of raw processing power.

Software

The Nexus 7 will launch running the latest version of Google's mobile OS, Android 4.3. Amongst its other new features, Android 4.3 will allow users to implement Restricted Profiles, preventing children from racking up costly in-app purchases. The iPad mini runs iOS 6 with an expected update to Apple's recently revealed IOS 7 expected this fall. iOS 7 redesigns Apple's familiar layout with a clean, chic flat design and an overall redesign.

Camera

The cameras for both devices are equally matched both having 5-megapixel rear cameras and 1.2-megapixel front cameras.

Battery

The exact battery specs for the iPad mini are still unknown but Apple claims the mini can offer up to hours of play where the Nexus 7 provides up to nine hours of active use.

Connectivity

The Nexus 7 and iPad mini come in both Wi-Fi only and cellular variants. The Nexus running on a 4G network and the mini on a LTE variant.

Price and availability

Nexus 7 offers a superb set of cutting-edge specifications and is priced ultra-competitively. Google has confirmed official US pricing of $229 (16GB; Wi-Fi-only), $269 (32GB; Wi-Fi-only), and $349 (LTE). Whereas the iPad mini starts at $100 more at $329 (16GB; Wi-Fi only) and goes up from there.

Verdict

The Nexus 7 has some advantages over the iPad mini such as processing power and display. Oh and one additional feature that the iPad mini or any iPad for that matter doesn't have, wireless charging. But the iPad has some advantages over the Nexus 7 like the battery life and Apple offers a 64GB model for those who want more storage. It comes down to what kind of tablet you like as a customer. Both devices have their pros and cons but if you want a reasonable priced powerful machine our vote is for the Nexus 7.

What tablet would you choose the Apple iPad mini or the Google Nexus 7?
