After a Mass for tens of thousands of people who attended the event in St. Peter's Square despite the rain. Pope Francis delivered a rather somber and sad message at "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message. His Sanctity lamented the suffering of people in the conflicts currently making headlines and called for violence everywhere to end. "We ask Jesus, the victor over death, to lighten the sufferings of our many brothers and sisters who are persecuted for his name, and of all those who suffer injustice as a result of ongoing conflicts and violence, and there are many," he said.

“May the international community not stand by before the immense humanitarian tragedy unfolding in these countries and the drama of the numerous refugees,” said the Pontiff. “I think in particular of the young people who were killed last Thursday at Garissa University College in Kenya, for all who have been kidnapped, and for those forced to abandon their homes and their dear ones.”

Pope Francis then spoke about economic oppression, “We ask for peace and freedom for the many men and women subject to old and new forms of enslavement on the part of criminal individuals and groups,” he said before asking for peace from drug and arms dealers, and the corrupt officials that collaborate with them. The Pontiff finished the address by consoling the suffering, the poor and the sick before wishing the world a happy Easter.
