Pope Francis New Lamborghini: Pontiff Will Auction Sports Car For Charity, Will Keep His Ford Focus

Pope Francis' new car definitely looks like an angel! The 80-year-old was presented with the keys to a brand-new white with yellow-gold detailing Lamborghini Huracan, specially-made for him by the Italian brand, and inspired in his cassock.

According to Vatican News, the luxury car base price usually starts at US$274,390, but, now that the Pope blessed the car and signed the hood it will cost more than that. The site also informed that the Argentine Pontiff's new ride will be auctioned off by Sotheby's in London and the proceeds given to four charities in Pope Francis' name.

A statement from the Holy See Press Office said some of the proceeds will go to the papal charity "Aid to the Church in Need" towards rebuilding homes, churches, and public buildings in Iraq's Nineveh Plains. These funds, the statement said, will help Christians who had taken refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan "to finally return to their roots and recover their dignity."

The "John XXIII Community" is expected to be another recipient, and two other Italian charities which work mostly in Africa, will also receive some of the funds to support projects dedicated to providing medical care for women and children.

The Pontiff is the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, the first to have a papal name without a number title since Lando in 913 AD, and the first Pope from outside Europe since the Syrian Gregory III, who reigned in the 8th century.

He became Pope after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on February 28, 2013. A papal conclave elected Bergoglio as his successor on March 13. He chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
