During his weekly audience at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican this Wednesday, Pope Francis admitted that separation or divorce is “inevitable” and sometimes even “morally necessary,” especially when domestic violence exists at home.

“There are cases in which separation is inevitable. Sometimes it can become even morally necessary, precisely when it comes to subtracting the weaker spouse, or small children, from more serious injuries caused by arrogance and violence, by humiliation and exploitation and by indifference,” said the Holy Father.

This message, which was addressed towards the challenges that modern families can face nowadays, was emitted by the Pope after the Vatican presented a document that will be discussed in a meeting between archbishops around the world, and which aims to support divorcées and gay families.

El Papa Francisco who has been committed to giving advice to young people and families around the world in order to guide them through a path fulfilled with faith and understanding, acknowledged that some troubled spouses are able to overcome their problems and revive their marriages. However, he added that not all separated couples can do so and asked the attendees to keep them in their thoughts.

“Let us ask the Lord for a strong faith to see with his eyes the reality of family life, and for a deep love to approach all families with his merciful heart.”
