Lucas will return to "Pretty Little Liars" fro Season 5 and presumably re-enroll at Rosewood High. ABC Family

Season 5 of “Pretty Little Liars” will welcome the return of Lucas, and while fans are excited to see Rosewood’s resident nerd return, they are also very suspicious. Lucas was a major player in the “A”-centric mysteries of Rosewood before disappearing from school and all of Season 4, so obviously now that he is back, a lot of fans want to know why. Lucas started his role on the series as the shy but sweet yearbook nerd who befriended Hanna, fans soon learned that Lucas was another unfortunate victim of Ali’s tormenting.

After Caleb’s arrival in Rosewood, the pair became close friends, and Caleb even moved in with him, but the relationship soon soured, with Lucas becoming aggressive and acting down right bizarre. Lucas became even more sinister when in Season 3 he admitted to working with the “A” team, but only under the pretense that Mona was blackmailing him into service. So after a season long hiatus and Ali’s return to Rosewood, his arrival in Season 5 seems even more suspicious, leaving fans to wonder if Lucas is “A.” So we have complied the evidence to see if Lucas could in fact be the notorious “A” or perhaps he is just up to no good and back in with the “A” team.

First off, he could totally be due to his lack of interaction in Rosewood with any of the Liars in all of Season 4. He notably left Rosewood High in Season 3 to be homeschooled, but he still lived in town, meaning it wouldn’t be odd if the Liars ran into him outside of school, but he was nowhere to be found. Lucas seriously dropped off the radar and with no one to answer to, he would have ample time to be “A.” Maybe the Liars have seen Lucas, but he was just sporting a black hoodie. As for his “A” like abilities, Lucas has a ton, he is a male and young, which would account for “A’s” recent increase in agility, and he is very intelligent and has a notable penchant for snapping pictures.

Lucas is always taking photos wherever he goes and people rarely question him, mainly because he simply blends into the crowd. Talk about a great cover for “A.” As for his association with the “A” team, Hanna did openly confront him, and it was obvious to viewers that the normally sweet teen was not himself. He claimed that Mona had been making his life a living hell, which lead him to participating in the “A” team, but what if that was all a lie?

As for his return in Season 5, the timing seems less than coincidental to say the least. Ali has been faking her death for well over a year and now as soon as she is back home, Lucas suddenly reemerges. Lucas’s decision to be homeschooled could have had nothing to do with Mona from the start, instead he could have been “A” this whole time, attempting to track down Ali. By leaving high school, he would have had plenty of time to investigate without anyone inquiring, however now that is back in Rosewood there is nowhere better to keep an eye on her than at school.

Our final piece of evidence that connects Lucas to “A” is his past with Alison. It’s completely understandable why Lucas would hate Ali, the girl literally made his high school years a nightmare. Insisting on calling him “Hermy the Hermaphrodite” and continually ridiculing him, Lucas didn’t put up much of a fight when Ali was still in Rosewood but maybe he had enough and finally snapped. “A” did attempt to kill Ali by hitting her on the head with a rock from behind, a somewhat cowardly move, while still being vengeful. Lucas is unaccounted for the night of Ali’s disappearance, in the Season 4 finale “A is for Answers” Ali admitted to the Liars the full events of the night of her disappearance, eliminating many suspects from fans list but Lucas was notably absent. He could have been the one to attack Ali, but the main question is why would Mrs. DiLaurentis protect him?
