Mrs. DiLaurentis was killed after covering up for "A" and Ali's attempted killer. Fans still don't know why Mrs. D attempted to protect "A" but a new spoiler photo from "Pretty Little Liars" show runner Marlene King may reveal why. King posted a photo of Mrs. DiLaurentis on her Instagram and teased her return for the forthcoming Christmas episode. ABC Family

The “Pretty Little Liars” Season 4 finale gave fans a ton of the answers they were desperately searching for. However, like any good mystery when one door closes, two more open. Fans finally learned the intimate details of the night Ali disappeared. They watched as she met Toby, Ezra and even Ian at the Kissing Rock. But the young and ruthless Alison still seemed in control of the entire situation, after leaving the Kissing Rock, she seamlessly threatened Aria’s father Byron, she fought with Spencer and discovered her best friend’s Adderall addiction and decided she had made enough buzz for one night and started heading home. But Ali didn’t make it in her front door, before getting hit in the head with a rock and falling unconscious. Fans are assuming that the person who attempted to kill Alison is the current “A,” but the main burning question that emerged from the Season 4 finale is why exactly Mrs. DiLaurentis was burying Alison. Even though she didn’t know her daughter was still alive, why is Mrs. DiLaurentis attempting to cover up Alison’s death? Or the better question why is Mrs. DiLaurentis protecting “A”? Check out our theories below!

In order to want to protect “A” over exposing them as the presumed murderer of Alison, we are assuming that “A” must be someone near and dear to Mrs. DiLaurentis’s heart. We haven’t seen the stone cold Jessica open up to many people, so that is why we are guessing that “A” may also be her child. Maybe Ali was hit on the head by Jason, her troubled older brother, or even more mysterious a still yet unknown child out of wedlock. Jason is technically only Ali’s half-brother, Spencer’s father Peter Hastings is actually his biological father. So maybe Mr. Hastings wasn’t the first extra martial relationship Mrs. DiLaurentis participated in. If “A” is Mrs. DiLaurentis’s unacknowledged child, her distaste from Alison and torturing of Jason would make sense, but why the Liars?

That is why we also think that Alison’s tormentor and current “A” could be Mrs. DiLaurentis’s twin. In the “Pretty Little Liars” book series, which the TV show is loosely based off, Alison has a twin, who is central to the plot. Alison’s twin is pivotal in her murder, and also is the second “A” that emerges after Mona is killed. But the executives of “Pretty Little Liars” and even Sasha Pieterse, who plays Alison, have confirmed that Ali’s evil twin will not be included in the television show. But she did give away a serious clue when speaking to E! Online, "If there is such a thing as a twin in Rosewood, it's probably not for Alison, that's also something to keep in mind."

If you had an evil twin, where would they hide in Rosewood? The only logical answer is Radley Sanatorium. Mrs. DiLaurentis has multiple connections to Radley Sanatorium, in addition to sitting on the board. Perhaps Mrs. DiLaurentis’s evil twin is as stealthy as Mona, aka the first “A” and can seamlessly slip out of Radley. This would also explain why Mrs. DiLaurentis was frantically attempting to get Alison to stay in the house on the night she disappeared, she was on the phone with someone regarding a missing person. It seems likely that Mrs. DiLaurentis found the missing person, better known as “A,” but it was too late.

It also seems likely that “A” threatened her with something worse if Mrs. DiLaurentis exposed him/her for the death of Alison. In addition to the cover up of Alison’s death, “A” may have threatened to expose one of the family’s deep rotted secrets—which they have many to spare. “A” deals in secrets and manipulation, and knows exactly how to use your worst fears against you, so maybe Mrs. DiLaurentis mourned her daughter’s death but decided to go along with “A’s” coercion in order to protect the rest of her family.
