Just days before he turns 92, Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, will be spending a few weeks in the hospital.

Buckingham Palace announced Thursday that the Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to a hospital in order to undergo exploratory surgery on his abdomen, the Guardian reported. He is being treated at London Clinic following "abdominal investigations," which come after recent reports that the duke was unwell. The operation is likely scheduled for Friday. His birthday is Monday.

"His Royal Highness the duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. He is expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks. Further updates will be issued when appropriate," read a statement issued by Buckingham Palace.

He is reported to not be feeling ill in recent days as he appeared at a presentation at the palace Thursday, laughing and joking with those in attendance of the ceremony where the queen named him a member of the Order of New Zealand. This is in contrast to Monday night, where he excused himself from an event Monday because of an illness. He returned Tuesday for the 60th anniversary of the queen's coronation, the Associated Press reported.

He is known to have a history of health problems in recent years, including a blocked coronary artery in 2011, CNN reported. He was hospitalized in June 2012 for a bladder infection. He had to be readmitted to a hospital in Scotland for treatment of said infection two months later.
