"Scandal" fans can rejoice, as the show will be returning to ABC in less than a month on Thursday, October 3. The show ended Season 2 with the media learning that Olivia is the president's mistress and viewers learned that the mysterious head of the B613 is none other than Olivia's father. If you're curious about the leak behind the media frenzy, know that the story arc won't be carried out and viewers will immediately learn the source. "When we come back in this first episode, you do hear who spilled the beans and why. It's pretty extraordinary and you won't be able to guess," says Kerry Washington to TVGuide.com. "It's pretty darn surprising because we all read the scripts out loud together and we were shocked," added Tony Goldwyn. But the real ongoing story arc that viewers are curious about is Olivia and Fitz, especially with Jake in the mix. The past season saw Fitz returning to Mellie and Olivia willingly kissing Jake. She showed some vulnerability and emotion towards him risking his safety for hers, hinting at a potential relationship. Jake was sent to the hole by Olivia's father, but he'll definitely be back, as actor Scott Foley has been made a regular for Season 3 of "Scandal." "I really think it's kind of wonderful because they don't know who he is yet. He's getting in the way of their Fitz-Liv love ... but it's his job," said Shonda Rhimes to HuffPost TV. "Also, I've been stalking Scott Foley for a very, very long time." 'Scandal' Season 3 Spoilers Roundup: Check Out 4 Leaked Details About The New Season
So does the return of Scott Foley mean that Olivia and Fitz are off? Chances are, yes. We have no doubt that the two will end up together in the end, but for the time being, it is safe to assume that Olivia and Fitz are in the "off-again" part of their on-again, off-again relationship. With Olivia learning about Fitz killing Verna and the return of Jake (full-time), there's no doubt that she will be in a some form of a relationship with him once he returns. In fact, Scott Foley has even hinted at a potential romance between Olivia and Jake in an interview, acknowledging that viewers hated that storyline.
"I think we're going to find out a lot more about B613 this season, and the relationship between Jake and Fitz," Scott Foley says. "And interestingly enough, maybe explore ... I don't know ... maybe explore the bit of a love triangle that was happening last season that everyone hated so f***ing much." It seems safe to bet that Oliva's team will clean up the media mess of the leaked story of the president's extra-marital affair and Mellie will be by her husband's side for his re-election. That said, there's no hope for Fitz and Mellie. When asked if the two could ever be happy, actor Tony Goldywn revealed that it is out of the question. "I think Fitz knows that he and Olivia are supposed to be together ... whether they ever will be is anyone's guess, but I think once you know what he knows about Olivia, there's no way you can backtrack and settle for a relationship like the one he has with Mellie," said the actor to the Huffington Post. "It's just too toxic and too fraudulent on a lot of levels. Even though he has genuine respect and love for Mellie, and he feels a duty to her, but I think Fitz and Mellie are not good for each other."
