After the outrage that currently exists in the United States and the rest of the world for all the accusations of sexual misconduct, the words of Nabih al-Wahsh have generated a wave of rejection, after the Egyptian lawyer declared that men should rape women who wears torn clothes. Getty Images

According to a study of the United Nations, worldwide almost all women have declared that they have suffered some type of sexual harassment or abuse. As presented by the intergovernmental organization, this misconduct includes any improper and unwelcome conduct that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offence or humiliation to another person.

The sexual misconduct revelations in Hollywood, and the recent beauty pageant of Miss Peru, the #MeToo trend that invited women to tweet their experiences of sexual assault, among other types of actions that have become viral, have strongly condemned any type of sexual violence, making it clear that in the world there’s no space for depraved people.

Unfortunately not everyone thinks the same, and although we want to think that they are the minority, the comments of an Egyptian lawyer during a television program where a bill to tackle prostitution was discussed, have generated the wrath of millions.

Without any type of compunction or remorse, Nabih al-Wahsh, in a macho way, has defended harassment and rape. When asked his opinion about women wearing torn jeans, he answered directly, "What I'm saying is that when a girl goes like this it's a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her."

From the moment he uttered those words, the National Council for Women in Egypt has rejected the comments and confirms that they will lodge a complaint against the lawyer and the television program where the debate was presented. "All council members denounce and repudiate these statements (from Nabih al-Wahsh) in which they explicitly promote rape and sexual harassment," the organization said in a statement, reported by The Independent.

A 2013 United Nations study revealed that almost all Egyptian women, 99.3% to be exact, said they had been victims of some kind of sexual harassment, from rapprochement to even rape.

According to Saudi Arabian newspaper Al Arabiya, Wahsh indicated that after his appearance on the program he has been the target of strong criticism, especially on social networks. "Girls must respect themselves so that others respect them too," he added.
