Shellie Zimmerman, the wife of acquitted murder suspect George Zimmerman, pleaded guilty Wednesday to perjury. Mrs. Zimmerman was sentenced to one-year probation and 100 hours of community service for lying during her husband's bail hearing. The 26-year-old was charged with felony perjury after lying about her and her husband's finances when George Zimmerman was arrested. George Zimmerman was acquitted last month of the shooting death of 17-year-old Florida teen, Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman's trial sparked national outrage about racial profiling in the United States.

Prosecutors charged Shellie Zimmerman after she was heard talking about a large sum of money she failed to disclose during husband George's bail hearing. It is reported that a donations foundation was set up through PayPal while Mr. Zimmerman was going on trial. NBC reports the donations amounted to $135,000. It is reported Mrs. Zimmerman was overheard talking about the funds on a jailhouse phone, this is how the prosecution became award of her lying. Shellie Zimmerman was originally charged with felony perjury, but pled guilty to a lesser charge.

Shellie Zimmerman is a nursing student, by pleading guilty to the lesser charge and not the felony she will still be able to apply for jobs in the health-care industry. After making her false statements during her husband's bail hearings George Zimmerman's bail was revoked. Before going on trial for second-degree murder George Zimmerman was released on bond. The not guilty verdict angered many following the case. Boycotts of Florida have been called for by celebrities like Madonna and Stevie Wonder. President Obama made statements after riots began to break out protesting the acquittal.

The President attempted to calm the American people and gave examples as to why members of the African American community were angry over the judgment. Obama also urged the American people not to lose sight over the strides we have made as a country against racism. As part of her plea deal Shellie Zimmerman had to write a letter of apology to the judge that presided over her husband's bail hearing.
