At the end of Season 3 of Fox's "Sleepy Hollow," fans were devestated to learn co-lead actress Nicole Beharie's character, Abbie Mills, was killed off. It has been some time since the major event but for the first time co-star Tom Mison (who plays Ichabod Crane) is publicly speaking on the subject.

During a roundtable conversation at London MCM Comic Con, the actor spoke to The Realistic Optimist and discussed the "Sleepy Hollow" fans outcry, black women in leading roles on American TV, and his current relationship with Beharie.

"The response to Abbie's death over there [U.S.] it was a huge thing, it got so far that there was even an article in The Washington Post about it," Mison said. "Because Abbie Mills represented more than just another character in the show. It wasn't an easy decision for them to make. I know that. The writers, they like writing Abbie Mills. And I like acting with Nicole."

In regard to seeing Icabod in a different role, Mison said it will be interesting as he only seen Icabod as the sidekick character because viewers could relate more to Abbie as she navigated the world of "Sleepy Hollow."

Mison also echoed what Fox CEO Dana Walden told reporters after the "Sleepy Hollow" Season 3 finale, saying the decision had to be made for Abbie Mills to die. He also said that he does not know if there were any politics behind the action.

Furthermore, the actor addressed fan outcry stating that he understands that the killing of a character like Abbie Mills represents much more to some viewers.

"When you have a woman of color in the lead role, it’s not just a woman of color in the lead role. It immediately means so much more than that, across the whole of America," Mison said. "There’s a woman of color in a position that not very long ago she wouldn’t have been. It comes to symbolize so much more. So when something like this happens, when they kill off said character, of course it’s going to mean an awful lot more, consequently."

Furthermore, Mison revealed that nothing has changed in his and Beharie's relationship since she has been killed off the series. "My relationship with Nicole has not changed because of her death on the show," said Mison.
