The year 2017 has been exhausting in my ways and the start of a new year is always a great way to start fresh with a positive mentality. Sydney, Australia is the first major city in the world that will welcome 2018 and their annual fireworks spectacle is always one to watch. The city’s festivities start at 6pm (local time) which would be around 2am ET up until the stroke of midnight 6 hours later for the rockin’ light show.
Right at 6pm there’s a pre-show entertainment and according to the official Sydney New Year’s Eve official website there’s quite a treat in store. “Prepare to be thrilled as our flying ace masterminds an aerial display just for NYE,” the site informs. “At 6.50pm, a tug boat takes centre stage in Sydney Harbour with a stunning water display followed by an encore aerial performance at 8pm.”
At 8:38 “welcome to the country” starts. “The ceremony reflects our respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their heritage and living cultures”, the site adds. “During the 5 minute ceremony, eucalyptus smoke is released over the water, cleansing Sydney Harbour of any bad spirits. Flares are released and spectacular images on the pylons celebrate Eora country.”
At 9pm the first fireworks start for the little ones. “The first fireworks allow our littlest spectators, who may nod off a little earlier, the chance to see a fantastic display,” the official website writes. “The 8 minute display includes fireworks released from 4 barges and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Includes the winning entry from the ABC’s Design Your Own Firework competition. Tune in to the synchronised simulcast on KIIS 106.5 FM.”
At 9:15pm: “Sydney Harbour is illuminated with ships gliding across the water, enchanting spectators of all ages. Each vessel is decorated with cool white ropelight, dazzling the crowds and adding to the unique choreography as they dance in the harbour.”
Then at the stroke of midnight... “we celebrate the start of the new year in spectacular fashion. The 12 minute display features a huge range of pyrotechnic effects launched from firing points on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and 7 barges in the harbour. Tune in to the synchronised simulcast on KIIS 106.5 FM.”
