PORT OF SPAIN – The United States fell short of a two-game sweep in their 2018 World Cup Qualifiers this month as they were held scoreless in a 0-0 draw with Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday night.

The United States Men's National Team got a result out of the game, and are tied with Trinidad and Tobago with 4 points atop Group C heading into 2016 where they will have two games against Guatemala in March.

Team USA came out flat in the first half, but looked much better in the second half, especially after making two substitutions to jumpstart their offense.

The United States had two great scoring chances in both halves. The first came on a Jozy Altidore run with minutes remaining in the first half. Altidore sent a cross to a wide-open Gyasi Zardes in front of the net, but the LA Galaxy star missed the header as the ball sailed past him.

"Jozy had a good game," USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said after the match. "He had good energy, we saw his cross for Gyasi early in the second half where we nearly scored.

Jermaine Jones had a chance to win the game in the second half, on a similar shot that he scored against Portugal in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Jones blasted a right-footed shot from outside the box that hooked to the left, but sailed just high as it hit the cross bar and bounced out of play.

It was an odd game for the United States who dominated possession and held an advantage in corner kicks, but were outshot nearly two-to-one by the Trinidadian and Tobagonians.

Tim Howard started in goal for the United States, marking his return to the net in the starting XI for the first time since the United State's 2014 World Cup loss to Belgium in the round of 16.

Portland Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe made his second appearance for the Stars and Stripes when he came in for Tim Ream in the 68th minute as Klinsmann substituted offense for defense looking for a late goal and three points.

It was the second game for both teams as each looks to qualify for the 2018 World Cup representing the CONCACAF region. The U.S. made quick work of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-1 on Friday, and Trinidad and Tobago won in Guatemala 2-1.

Klinsmann should be pleased with the result heading into the new year, but rest assured their will be plenty of naysayers who will be calling for his removal after the heavily favorite U.S. did not get the 6 points they were hoping for out of these two matches.

"As expected, it was a tricky game. There were chances on both sides, I think we had the better of them… We should have put one away," Klinsmann concluded.

If the U.S. soccer federation were to fire Klinsmann (which they should not), they would definitely pull the trigger now with nearly four months for his successor to take over and implement his tactics and style of play on the team.
