Early this year The CW announced "The Vampire Diaries" would return to the network for an eighth season. With that news many fans are speculating that the former star Nina Dobrev would return as Elena Gilbert.

The series showrunner, Julie Plec has given fans hope that the starlet will return. In fact, she was successful in featuring Dobrev's voice in "The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 finale.

According to Plec, bringing Elena back would be much fun, however, the actress is determined to pursue her career outside the series. So, Plec is settling on having her for the final season of the vampire drama. Plec told TVLine, "So I'm sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end."

With that said, it looks as though "The Vampire Diaries" is coming to an end. Multiple reports are confirming Dobrev will return for the upcoming season but if you take into consideration what Plec said about her return ,then it seems as though the show is at its last leg.

An unnamed source told Hollywood Life, "When the show ends Nina will be a part of it some way shape or form." The source continued, "She is 10,000 percent coming back."

If you recall, Dobrev's character took her exit in the sixth season finale, "I'm Thinking of You All the While." In the episode Kai (Chris Wood) magically links Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Elena's lives, leaving it that Elena will only wake when Bonnie dies. Elena is currently locked inside the Salvatore tomb until she is able to rise again.

Meanwhile, Plec revealed some interesting details about the new big bad for Season 8. Talking with Yahoo! TV, the showrunner said viewers will learn more about the darkness in the coming season and that the mythology or name will not be revealed until the show arrives.

"We are not calling it anything, we are waiting for Season 8. I mean, internally, we’re calling it something, but we’re not telling people what that is yet," said Plec. "It’s funny, this is the first time we’ve done this little story trick where we’re actually withholding the identity and mythology of the new villain from the audience before the next season."

The showrunner continued: "What could it be that’s been around for thousands of years? We didn’t see it, but it has some creepy ass monster hands, and it has the ability to get inside your heard and strip away everything good about you. There’s a nice mystery taking us into next season about what exactly this creature is."
