Kraft Foods made an unsettling announcement that there may be a Velveeta shortage in America. With Superbowl around the corner, this news comes as a shock to those who are fans of the cheese, which is a popular ingredient for dip. "Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore said in an email to Advertisement Age, who first reported the Velveeta shortage.

That said, thus far AdAge is not able to confirm whether the Velveeta shortage will trickle down to the rest of the country or be restricted to the Brooklyn/Manhattan geographic area. "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue." According to Moore, there are many factors that have contributed to the shortage. In fact, AdAge quotes Moore saying: "I can tell you there is a combination of factors involved, but the driver is really the high demand. We really haven't heard much from consumers about it at all. It's a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand."

The potential Velveeta shortage has been dubbed "Cheesepocalypse" and fans of the pasteurized processed yellow cheese have taken to Twitter to air their grievances. The cheese made its début to the market in 1928 with the claims that it will "always melt perfectly." Fun fact: Kraft recommended mixing the cheese with milk to create a sauce to serve "over toasted sandwiches of peanut butter and sweet pickle relish."And if you think a Velveeta shortage is no big deal, then think again! The cheese can be used to make a wide array of dips, appetizers and entrées that are both delicious and crowdwinners. Here are eight Latin-inspired (albeit not Latin authentic) recipes you can make with Velveeta: Beef Enchilada Bake; Velveeta Ultimate Nachos; VELVEETA Queso Blanco Cheese Sauce Fundido; Cowboy Quesadillas; Layered Mexican Dip; VELVEETA Queso Blanco Spinach & Artichoke Dip; VELVEETA Mexican Dip; and the famous Queso Dip. Other great Velveeta recipes include: Cheesy Bacon Brunch Casserole and Velveeta Potato Bites among others.
