The United States will honor its veterans this November 11, bringing a great sense of pride to the country by celebrating the brave heroes who continue to fight for the freedom of our nation. Here’s how it all began: Veterans Day

was called "Armistice Day."

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed this day as the first commemoration with the following words, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will

be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

We’ve put together some quotes to remind us of the solemnity of this day, and

most importantly, to celebrate our heroes.

“As we express our gratitude, we

must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

John Fitzgerald Kennedy

“Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.”

G.K. Chesterton

“The veterans of our military services have put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms

that we enjoy. They have dedicated their lives to their country and deserve to

be recognized for their commitment.”

Judd Gregg

“Well, look at what people are doing for returned veterans now. The wounded warriors. They're working hard to make the wounded veterans feel that they are loved and welcomed home, unlike Vietnam. It was not a very kind, gentle world then. I think we are kinder and gentler.” – Barbara Bush

“The only war is the war you fought in. Every veteran knows that.” – Allan Keller

“In valor there is hope.” – Publius Cornelius Tacitus

“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” – Jeff Miller

“As a former veteran, I understand the needs of veterans, and have been clear - we will work together, stand together with the Administration, but we will also question their policies when they shortchange veterans and military retirees.” – Solomon Ortiz

“America's veterans deserve the very best health care because they've earned it.” – Jim Ramstad

“Better than honor and glory, and History's iron pen, was the thought of duty done and the love of his fellow-men.” – Richard Watson Gilder

“History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap.” – Ronald Reagan

“Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul.” – Michel de Montaigne

“My heroes are those who risk their lives every day to protect our world and make it a better place -- police, firefighters, and members of our armed forces.” – Sidney Sheldon
