June has arrived which means that Father's Day 2014 is approaching quickly. The holiday -- which was created to honor fathers the way Mother's Day honors mothers -- is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States and many other countries. This year, Father's Day falls on June 15, 2014. Other countries that celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June, include: Argentina, Belize, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.

While most Latin American countries celebrate Father's Day on the same date as the United States, some do not. For instance, Nicaragua celebrates on June 23, Uruguay celebrates on the second Sunday of July and the Dominican Republic celebrates on the last Sunday of July. Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash. is given credit for establishing Father's Day in 1909 after listening to a Mother's Day Sermon.

Dodd wanted to honor her widowed Civil War veteran father, William Smart, and picked June 17, 1910 in honor of her father's birthday. The commercial success of Anna Jarvis' Mother's Day helped turn Father's Day into an official holiday -- President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966 issuing the third Sunday in June as Father's Day and President Richard Nixon signed it into law.

According to the U.S. Census, as of 2008, there are an estimated 70.1 million fathers. Many eateries around the country will be offering freebies on or around Father's Day to get customers in their venue.
