Starz is premiering a new original series set during England's War of the Roses. "The White Queen" is based on the popular historical novel by Philippa Gregory author of "The Other Boleyn Girl." "The White Queen" centers on court intrigues during the reign of King Edward IV, the young Yorkist king that deposed the Lancastrian monarch Henry VI.

King Edward (Max Irons) falls in love with a commoner from the House of Lancaster, Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson) and makes her his Queen. The House of York is not pleased with the King's choice of Queen. Typically, kings marry through arrangements made for political or financial gain. "She is my Queen of choice," King Edward is seen yelling at a women questioning his marriage.

One of Edward's councilors Lord Warwick, known as "The King Maker," is furious Edward has married Elizabeth and convinces Edward's brother, George, to try and take the throne. This starts up another series of battles.

The series will focus more on Queen Elizabeth and how she comes into power and her way of dealing with her enemies at court. While the focus is on Elizabeth the stories going on around the main characters will be centered on the historical events of the time.

Like other period dramas "The Tudors" and "The Borgias" expect a lot of violence, nudity and sex from "The White Queen." Don't look to this series as a historically accurate drama. While it is based on history, the show is almost total fiction. It deals with witchcraft and suggests that Queen Elizabeth was a witch who used magic to seduce the King.

In the first episode, set to premier Saturday August 10 at 8pm on Starz, titled "In Love With The King," we learn how Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV met and the circumstances that surround their relationship.

It is 1463 and Edward IV is going off to fight yet another battle. Elizabeth is widowed as a result of battle and goes to the king to request her husband's lands be returned. There Edward falls in love with Elizabeth and asks her to be his mistress. This request starts a series of events that will have dramatic consequences for England and its people.

According to the synopsis of the book by Philippa Gregory Elizabeth Woodville, of the House of Lancaster, is widowed when her husband is killed in battle. Aided and abetted by the raw ambition and witchcraft skills of her mother Jacquetta, Elizabeth seduces and marries, in secret, reigning King Edward IV, of the family of the white rose, the House of York. As long as there are other claimants to Edward's throne, the profound rivalries between the two families will never be laid to rest. Violent conflict, shocking betrayal and murder dominate Elizabeth's life as Queen of England, passionate wife of Edward and devoted mother of their children.

Once Elizabeth is queen, factions form to try and bring her down. Her husband's throne is not yet secure and Elizabeth is the kind of woman that will do anything to protect her family and the rights of her children. Historically Elizabeth Woodville (1437-1492) is one of the most formidable women in English history.
