Sandra Padilla, from Swansboro, North Carolina, was named “La Reina de la Canción” tonight after more than two months of the drama and passion that characterized the Univision reality competition for the queen of regional Mexican music. The decision came during the two-hour season finale of the popular Univision production and featured special performances by Lucero, Shaila Dúrcal, Natalia Jiménez, and Grupo Bronco.

“These powerful, beautiful and talented women have inspired millions of viewers and fans with their personal stories as they pursue their passion to perform and share their voices,” said Lourdes Diaz, president of Entertainment, Univision Communications Inc. “We are thrilled to have brought this concept to Latino families to enjoy together and celebrate our culture.”

Padilla, 25, captivated fans across the country with her voice, securing their votes throughout the season by phone and social media. Chosen by the fans, Padilla, found her passion for singing when she was 12 years old. At the moment she was crowned, Padilla exclaimed: “All my life I’ve dreamed of this moment and I want to thank everyone, truly…thank you.” The Mexican-American singer, who currently lives in Chicago and studies business administration, also enjoys watching soccer, dancing and spending time at the beach.

As the newest member of regional Mexican musical royalty, Padilla will receive a recording contract with Universal Music and a 2017 Honda CR-V. Lucero will be Padilla’s co-manager, along with Universal Music, to further propel the promising music career of this new artist. She has received invitations to entertain audiences around the country who have fallen in love with the new star.

Contestant Yohanny Rodríguez, Dominican from Caledonia, IL, ended as second finalist in the singing competition; Deyra Barrera, Mexican from Hacienda Heights, CA, finished third; and Carmen Ríos, Mexican from Huntington Park, CA was fourth. Each of the contestants made sacrifices and displayed amazing talent as performers of regional Mexican music, a popular Hispanic music genre.

Helping the aspiring divas along the way as Team Stars were the Regional Mexican artists Marisol and Vicky Terrazas, Horóscopos de Durango, and Poncho Lizárraga, who in the final stretch served as judges. “El Gordo y La Flaca” correspondent Evelyn Sicairos served as social media reporter.

Throughout the season, some of the biggest names in the regional Mexican field, including Lupillo Rivera, Pepe Aguilar, Chiquis Rivera, Aída Cuevas, Banda El Recodo, A. B. Quintanilla, Helen Ochoa, Adriel Favela, Edwin Luna, and Banda MS, took the stage to wow audiences and contestants alike.
