The all-new Mazda Miata unveils today! Theophilus Chin

The next iteration of the most beloved roadster in the world promises to be bigger and better than ever! Well, only better, not bigger, thankfully. The 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5 will debut Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. PDT or 9 p.m. EST. Be sure to bookmark this page and watch the epic live stream event later this evening.

So what do we know about the new Mazda MX-5 so far? The 2016 Miata will boast an all-new chassis that will elevate the roadster's already legendary handling to new heights. According to Mazda, the new chassis will allow the engine to be positioned even closer to the vehicle's center. What's more, the 2016 Miata will boast a lower center of gravity than any previous generation.

As if the packaging improvements weren't enough, Mazda has seriously outdone themselves with an extensive weight-saving program. All in all, Mazda Miata engineers have managed to reduce weight by a staggering 100 kg, or 220 pounds, over the outgoing model.

As for the heart of the 2016 Mazda Miata, rumors suggest that the new roadster will be available with a choice of two engines. First, a potent 2.0-liter Skyactiv engine will push the Miata's output close to 200 horsepower, a healthy 30-horsepower bump over the current model. The second engine may be a more modest naturally-aspirated 1.5 liter engine derived from the Mazda2. The smaller engine will potentially be found in more basic models that should save a lot of weight by forgoing premium options like premium stereo, infotainment, navigation, and power seats.

Perhaps the only thing that could taint what is otherwise a flawless execution is the 2016 Miata's electric power steering (EPAS). Mazda decided to adopt electric steering to reduce weight, and promises that the new set up will still deliver all the feedback we savored in past Miatas. Time will tell whether Mazda has successfully engineered their steering.

The 2015 Mazda Miata debut will begin Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. PDT or 9 p.m. EST. The Miata's global unveiling will happen simultaneously in Tokyo; Barcelona; and Monterey, California.
