The 2015 race to the biggest honor in Hollywood has come to an end with the 87th Academy Awards, and it was a huge night for Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu as his film “Birdman” won four Oscars, including the two biggest awards of the night, Best Picture and Best Director. As Iñárritu said in his acceptance speech, (“Hmmm two Mexicans in a row is suspicious”) this is the second consecutive year a Mexican director takes the two awards home. Last year it was Alfonso Cuarón who won the Oscars for his space odyssey “Gravity” along with Emmanuel ‘El Chivo’ Lubezki who just won his second consecutive award for Best Cinematography.

While predictions were torn between Linklater’s “Boyhood” and González Iñárritu’s “Birdman”, it’s true that the Mexican director had won two of the most indicative awards according to critics; the Producers Guild Award went to “Birdman” and Iñárritu won the Directors Guild Award, meaning, in most cases, that he was the frontrunner for the Oscars.

Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay alongside screenwriters Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Armando Bo, with whom he also won the Golden Globe (and only award of the night for Iñárritu). The director's final speech was full of statements about immigration and the government in his country. Congratulations!
