President Donald Trump announced his new Labor Department candidate is the Cuban- American from Miami, Alexander Acosta; currently serving as the Dean of the Florida International University College of Law. In addition, he was a member of the National Labor Board.

Alexander Acosta - born January 16, 1969 - is the son of Cuban immigrants, and would be the first Hispanic member of Trump's cabinet if he is ratified as the new Labor Secretary.

"He's had a tremendous career," Trump said. "I think he'll be a tremendous secretary of labor."

According to the spanish CNN, Andrew Puzder -the president's first choice for the job – said on a statement released on Wednesday, February 15, that he is going to withdraw his nomination. "After careful consideration and discussions with my family, I am withdrawing my nomination as Secretary of Labor," Puzder said. "I am honored to have been considered by President Donald Trump to head the Department of Labor and put the US workers and businesses back on the road to sustainable prosperity."

During his professional career Mr. Acosta has twice been named one of the nation’s 50 most influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine, and also one of 100 most influential individuals in business ethics in 2008.

While Acosta served as U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Florida, he prosecuted several bank-related cases, corruption prosecution of Palm Beach County Commission Chairman Tony Masilotti, he conviction of Cali Cartel founders and emphasized health-care fraud prosecutions.

Dean Acosta additionally serves as the Chairman of U.S. Century Bank, the largest domestically-owned Hispanic community bank in Florida and one of the fifteen largest Hispanic community banks in the nation.

In 2013, the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce presented him with the Chairman’s Higher Education Award in recognition of his “outstanding achievements, leadership and determination throughout a lifetime of caring and giving back to the community.”
