‘Aquaman 2’ Release Date Delayed For The Franchise’s Own Good

It will be three years before fans get to see Arthur Curry in action once again in an “Aquaman” sequel. While some would say that this is a longer wait than it has to be, producer Peter Safran believes that it is the best way to go about the project.

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Safran explained that the decision to wait until 2022 for “Aquaman 2” will allow them to make a worthy follow-up. Safran is simply applying the same principle that has worked for his frequent collaborators, DC Films Walter Hamada and James Wan, in the “Conjuring” films.

“[Hamada], myself and James Wan always shared the same philosophy, which is: You want to do it right,” Safran said. “You don’t want to do it fast. You just want to do it right.”

Safran also believes that building up characters like Aquaman in their own films as opposed to team-up ones like “Justice League,” which didn’t do well at the box office, is the smart move. “I think that when you’re making really strong stand-alone movies, there’s really no need to bring them together. You want to give these characters room to breathe and live, and tell their stories,” he said.

This is why there is huge interest in exploring Aquaman’s underworld with the spinoff “The Trench,” which should help fans get by the long wait for the sequel. The film will focus on the deep-sea territory and creatures of the same name featured in the highest-grossing DC Comics movie. It takes place after the events of “Aquaman.”

It looks like “The Trench” will just be the first of a string of Aquaman world-building movies that Safran has in store for the future. He revealed that they are also interested in exploring other worlds within the Atlantean universe, but he isn’t ready to reveal what these are just yet.

There’s still no official announcement on the release date for “The Trench,” but Safran assured that it will be out “significantly” before “Aquaman 2.”
