Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber indirectly responded to the rumors that they lip-synced their duet at this year’s Coachella. The artists’ defense came after they were mocked on the E! show “Nightly Pop.”

The host of the show, Morgan Stewart, called Grande and Bieber’s attention by saying that the latter was obviously lip-synching during his surprise appearance at the music festival. After all, Bieber’s voice could already be heard singing some lines from “Sorry” even if his microphone was not on his mouth.

On his social media account, Bieber encouraged Stewart to build people up instead of bringing them down and talking negatively about them. He also slammed the host for laughing at other people’s expense.

“What hurts about this is the fact that you have a platform to make a difference,” Bieber wrote. “And rather than being positive you belittle people. Think about how awesome it felt for me to be on that stage after being away for so long, the excitement and joy it gave me doing the thing I love the most. I sang to backtrack like most cameos do this is a normal thing,” he added.

Grande responded to Bieber’s post by saying that what he did on stage was perfectly normal. The “Sweetener” singer also said that Bieber’s fans couldn’t have been more delighted to see him back on stage after a two-year absence.

“We also decided to do this 10 minutes before my set started,” Grande wrote. “We had 0 soundcheck, 0 rehearsal. You were singing with the backtracking like most cameos do. People are bored. People don’t know exactly how it feels to be under such scrutiny,” Grande added.

This week’s “Nightly Pop” installment began by showing a snippet from Bieber and Grande’s “Sorry” performance at Coachella. After seeing that Bieber’s microphone had not yet been held up to his mouth, Stewart said “whoa!”

His co-host, Nina Parker, came to Bieber’s defense and said that Bieber might have lip-synced but he has also been going through so much. Parker also went on to compliment Bieber’s new haircut.
