PS4 is about to ship: in order to make the most of your new Sony Playstation 4 console, you will need to update in order to use multiple features, including playing DVDs. Updates can sometimes be tricky because of the high demand from the new gaming system. A similar situation has been announced for the Xbox One: you will need to do a day one update in order to use your console, so make sure your internet connection is alive and running.

This is the procedure is for performing your day one update, from Sony. Be aware that using an update file for reinstallation: all your data will be deleted after you install. You will need to have your PS4 system handy as well as a computer connected to the Internet. You will also need a USB storage device with at least 1 GB of free space. The instructions continue from Sony: "PlayStation 4 System Software Version 1.50 Perform a new installation of the system software:

"On the USB storage device, create folders for saving the update file Using a computer, create a folder named "PS4". Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE". Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1. Save the file with the file name "PS4UPDATE.PUP". Click 'Download Now' to start the download. Turn off the power of your PS4 system completely. Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4 system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time). Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on to your PS4 system, and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds. The PS4 system starts in safe mode. Select [Update System Software] Follow the screens to complete the update. If your PS4 system does not recognize the update file, check that the folder names and file name are correct. Enter the folder names and file name in single-byte characters using uppercase letters."
