iPhone 6 release date rumors have been circulating for some time now. And while the exact specifics of the new iPhone can't be confirmed, International Business Times reports that it is likely the iPhone 6 will feature a screen made of sapphire glass, making it the hardest, most durable screen on virtually any smartphone on the market. Apple has reportedly spent over half a billion dollars to ensure sapphire glass can be delivered on a large scale for its next generation of smartphones.
iPhone 6's sapphire glass could make the iPhone "virtually scratch free" according to the marketing director at GT Advanced Technology, Jeff Nestel-Patt. Sapphire glass is 2.5 times stronger and more durable than Corning Gorilla Glass, which is the most common glass used in smartphones. While sapphire glass is currently used on the Touch ID home button and the lens cover of the iPhone 5s, it would seem that Apple is increasing production to allow the material to be used for the entire iPhone 6 screen.
According to Nestel-Patt, Apple paid $578 million to GT Advanced Technologies to speed up "the development of its next generation, large capacity ASF furnaces to deliver low cost, high volume manufacturing of sapphire material." iPhone 6 will most likely be released in 2014 with some revolutionary features.
