Tim Tebow's career as a New York Jet has come to an end.

Following a 2012 season where he saw limited playing time and threw for a total of only 39 yards, the New York Post's Brian Costello is reporting that Tebow has been released.

Arriving for the start of team workouts at the Jets' facility in Florham Park, New Jersey Monday morning, Tebow was let go shortly after.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said in a statement released by the organization. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped."

Tebow was looked upon by the Jets front office as someone who could provide competition to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Coming off a 2011 where he guided the Denver Broncos to a first round playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tebow was traded to New York after the Broncos signed future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez helped lead New York to back-to-back AFC Championships during his first two seasons in the league but the Jets sought competition for Sanchez following a 2011 season where he turned the ball over 26 times while the Jets missed the playoffs.

The experiment with Tim Tebow never really began as the 25-year-old quarterback appeared in 2 games and was only on the field for a total of 72 snaps. With the Jets' selection of quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, it was only a matter of time before the former University of Florida star's time in N.Y would come to an end.

In a late-season game against the Arizona Cardinals, Rex Ryan decided to bench Mark Sanchez and go with a different look at quarterback. Initially thought of as the No. 2 QB on the depth chart, Tebow was passed over as the Jets started former University of Alabama standout Greg McElroy instead.

While life in the NFL surely has its ups and downs, Tebow is highly regarded by at least one team from the Arena Football League, should his NFL endeavors come to a halt.

"Tim would certainly want to first his opportunities in the NFL, but we'd love to have him," Orlando Predators owner Brett Bouchy told reporters from the Orlando Sentinel.

"I think he would definitely improve as a quarterback in our league. Whenever Tim is willing, we have a contract waiting for him to sign."

Developing his game in the Arena League may not be a bad route to travel considering moves from the Arena League back to the NFL have been made successfully in years past.

Former Super Bowl champion quarterback Kurt Warner began to make a name for himself in the Arena League in 1995 as a member of the Iowa Barnstormers. Following major success with Iowa, Warner signed with the St. Louis Rams in 1998 and after one season as a back-up, Warner would lead the Rams to a Super Bowl Champion in 1999 as the starting quarterback.

A possible switch to a position such as fullback, H-back or tight end isn't ideal for Tebow because as he's stated many times in the past, he only views himself as a quarterback. With teams stockpiling quarterbacks through free agency and the recent NFL Draft, Tebow's options are certainly limited.

Heading to the Arena Football League may not be ideal, but it is certainly a move Tebow will have to consider given the success other players - including Warner - have had.

Drafted 25th overall by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft, Tim Tebow departed the college game as one of the best to ever play. He led the Florida Gators to National Championships in 2007 and 2009 while winning the Heisman Trophy Award in 2007 as well.

With only one true season of playing time under his belt, Tebow has thrown for over 2,400 yards and 17 touchdowns while running for 989 yards and 12 scores.
