The Tupac Shakur musical "Holler If Ya Hear Me," which features music by the late rapper is looking to make its Broadway debut next season. Playbill.com says the Tupac Shakur musical is in the middle of a five-week New York City workshop.
The musical is non-biographical and will be directed by Kenny Leon and the book was put together by Todd Kreidler.
The Tupac Shakur musical is being produced by Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur. The musical is about two childhood friends living in a fictional city trying to overcome their individual situations and achieve their dreams.
"Tupac was a prophet and I want everyone to see that," Leon told broadway.com. "'Holler If Ya Hear Me' is a present day musical using all of Tupac's music, but Tupac is not a character in the musical. Film producer Eric Gold is producing it and hopefully it will go really soon."
Tupac Shakur was a popular rapper in the 1990's his music often centered on sex, gangs and violence. Tupac himself was arrested and convicted of sexual assault. He was shot five times in the lobby of his recording studio in the early 90s.
Tupac would heal from those injuries, but in 1996 the rapper would not be so lucky. He was shot on September 7 in Las Vegas. Seven days later on September 13, Tupac died. Several albums featuring unheard music by Tupac have been released posthumously and sold millions of copies.
