On Sunday a 23-year-old woman from Australia was gored during the final day of the running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. The Australian woman was not the only person injured on Sunday. Four other people were taken to the hospital as well after encountering the animals.

Javier Sesma a heath official near the region where the running with the bulls took place told USA Today the 23-year-old was gored in the thorax. The Thorax is the part of the body between the neck and the diaphragm. It is enclosed by the ribs and contains the heart and lungs.

The woman is in serious condition and underwent surgery at Navarra Hospital. The woman was gored by a Miura bull. She was clinging onto a wooden fence on the entrance to the bullring when the animal began to stab her with its horns.

The Associated Press says it is rare for a woman to be gored at this event because runners are typically male. The other four people hurt by the bulls were a 39-year-old man from the United States, a 23-year-old man from Madrid and two men from Navarra.

A 19-year-old Spaniard was injured on Saturday when a large number of runners fell on top of him. The teen was rushed to a hospital after he stopped breathing but AP says he is awake and breathing on his own.

Many people are injured during Spain's annual running with the bulls. Several other runners were taken to local hospitals with gashes, stab wounds (from the bulls' horns) and one man from the US is reported to be in stable condition after being pierced with a bull's horn in his rectum.

The last person to die from an injury sustained while running with the bulls was a 27-year-old man from Spain. In 2009 he was gored in the neck and killed.

Miura bulls are the largest and fastes breed of bull in Spain. The can weigh over 1,500 pounds. Sunday's run took only two-minutes and six-seconds to cover a 928 yard distance.
