Coca-Cola is arguably one of the most popular soda brands in the world. You would think it tastes the same no matter where you go to enjoy it, but that is not the case. American's seem to be favoring the sweeter coke drink coming out of Mexico.

Mexican Coca-Cola is made using cane sugar while the U.S. version of the drink contains the artificial sweetener high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is less expensive than cane sugar. The Mexican Coke is slightly more expensive than its American counterpart, but some don't mind and say they prefer the taste no matter the price.

The Mexican drink has developed a cult following who say it is tastier and sweeter than regular Coke. It is especially popular among the hipster circles of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Customers are willing to shell out $3.50 for a glass bottle of Mexican soda as opposed to the $1.50 it would cost to get a coke made in America.

Soda is a controversial subject in New York City after its three-term Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, decided to try and ban large sugary drinks from movie theaters and other establishments that sell fountain drinks in a variety of sizes.

Even the New York Times has bought into the Mexican soda crazy. A NYT writer named Rob Walker wrote an opinion piece expressing how much he preferred the Mexican Coke over the U.S. version.

"I am casting myself in the role not of the reasonable observer but of the dubious product-cultist," Walker wrote. "Some years ago I noticed a glass bottle of Coke for sale, and that was something I hadn't seen in a while. It looked great. I enjoyed drinking it immensely."

"My rational explanation was Coke tastes better from a glass bottle than from a plastic one or from a can."

Walker said he didn't notice the Mexican label or Spanish writing scrolled across it. When he finally realized what he had to drink he realized he preferred the sweeter taste of Mexican cane sugar versus the controversial high fructose corn syrup used in America.

What is the difference between the two forms of sugar? Does anyone really know? Medical Daily says research has shown there are similarities between Mexican cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup but it is still unclear how well the body can process the HFCS.

Medical Daily says the Mexican producers of Coca-Cola believe they have a purer product because of the cane sugar. They believe the claims of American consumers that say they can taste a difference between the two types of Coke.
