Fans wait all year for Shark Week, usually an entertaining yet educational week long special about the creature we love to fear, the shark. Discovery Channel has been hosting Shark Week since 1987. The idea was originally planned to raise awareness about an animal that has more to fear from human than the other way around.

Eventually Shark Week evolved into a cult phenomenon but now is watched by millions of viewers and even celebrities have joined in on the fun. Fans of Shark Week were disappointed with the way this year's week long special began.

"Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives" first premiered on Sunday August 4 on the Discovery Channel. The film is a work of fiction, but passed off as a documentary. The plot deals with a group of scientists trying to figure out what kind of animal attacked a fishing vessel killing everyone on board.

The working theory throughout the film is that the prehistoric giant shark known as Megalodon is still alive lurking in the waters off the cost of Africa. The real Megalodon was a species of shark that went extinct two million years ago.

Just like the Animal Planet special "Mermaids: The Body Found" those that watched the Discovery Channel film about Megalodon became angry when they realized the entire thing was nothing more than a hoax.

Will Wheaton from "Star Trek" and "The Big Bang Theory" was one of the many people upset over the Megalodon hoax. Wheaton took to Twitter and demanded the Discovery Channel apologize to its viewers.
