Two days later and we're still talking about it. It's almost impossible to get it out of our heads. Miley Cyrus' controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards 2013 was more than just a musical number. She delivered a brow-rising performance in which she spent most of the time touching her privates, touching Robin Thicke's privates, twerking, motor boating one of her dancers' butt, sticking her tongue out, stroking her invisible hair, and making every parent in America and the world cover their children's eyes during her time on stage.

Out of all the elements of her stint at the VMA's, the one that sparked the most questions was the now-famous "twerk." It has been a popular search all summer, ever since Miley began to talk about it on Twitter and post pictures of her a** sticking out with the hashtag "twerk." It became more and more known when she demonstrated the whole world what it "really" meant in her music video for her chart-topping song "We Can't Stop." It so happens that "twerking" is a dance that's all about the movement of the butt, and here we explain with 5 fast facts all you need to know about the new craze that has parents shaking their heads in disapproval.

1) Twerking is a dance move that involves a person shaking the hips in an up-and-down bouncing motion, causing the dancer to shake, "wobble" and "jiggle." To "twerk" means to "dance in a sexually suggestive fashion by twisting the hips." "You take a wide stance with your legs turned out at 10 and 2 so your hips are externally rotated," she said. "Then you pulse up and down as you thrust the pelvis bone forward and back," Michelle Olson, a professor of exercise science and a certified strength and conditioning coach at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, said to ABC News.

2) Twerking was introduced in the United States into hip-hop culture by way of the New Orleans bounce music scene. In 1993, DJ Jubilee recorded the dance tune "Do The Jubilee All" in which he chanted, "Twerk baby, twerk baby, twerk, twerk, twerk." The video for the song increased the popularity of twerking, which became the most popular dance move since the "Dougie."

3) A great amount of credit for the expansion of twerking outside of New Orleans can be given to strip clubs in Houston and Atlanta, and somehow it has spread in many different scenarios ranging from Zumba classes, to Twerk Dance Teams, to instructional videos on YouTube on how to twerk, and even a scholarship that was offered briefly by rapper Juicy J.

4) Many recording artists have been referencing "twerk" for a while. Since the year 2000, some of them have benn: Ying Yang Twins, Waka Flocka Flame, Drake, Juicy J, French Montana, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicky Da B and Diplo.

5) Twerking is a good workout for your butt and thighs (so maybe Miley wasn't twerking right? Let's be honest, her butt looked awful!). It also works the deep muscles of the hips and the core muscles of the lower back and abdominals. However, over-twerking might throw out the lower back or make the knees creak.
