“American Horror Story: Coven” is certainly going to maintain some of the show’s notable frightening themes, because frankly even the trailer has me a bit scared. A new promo video for Season 3 has been released and we are finally starting to see of the main characters and even the infamous “School” in New Orleans. Following the synopsis of the first episode, “Bitchcraft” I was left imagining some sort of hocus pocus sisterhood but it is much deeper and darker than that, and “Coven” isn’t shying away from anything.

In the chilling 30 second clip there is a lot of blood, bodies and even some bullying. It kicks off with an unidentified eyeball staring through an eyehole at Madam LaLaurie, who is played by Kathy Bates. LaLaurie is sweating and covered in what appears to be blood and dirt, after the initial shock of being ‘caught,’ her mouth curves into an eerie smirk as the camera pans to a distressed shirtless man with blood running down his chest, his face is obscured by a large bull head. This is not the first time we have seen the bull headed man, in an earlier promo, the hybrid beast was quickly shown sprawled on the front steps of the School reaching out for help while the young witches simply stepped around him.

The main highlight within the new promo comes the first look at Taissa Farmiga, who plays Zoe in “Coven.” This seems to be the current day portion of the Season 3 split, the young teen seems to be recounting what has happened recently, she is seen kissing her boyfriend when blood begins to drip from his nose, then Zoe is screaming over his dead body. “Apparently I’m a witch,” Zoe says as the video shows her on a train following the horrifying incident. Before she is on the trip, Zoe’s mother enters her room, where she is curled up on her bed, “There’s something I should have told you,” her mother says to her. “There’s a school there for girls like you. You’ll be safe.”

But her mother apparently knows nothing about the “School” upon arrival Zoe is seen being pinned down to a table by a group of hooded girls. Zoe desperately screams as one of them takes a knife to plunge into her, Jessica Lange’s character, Fiona, then enters and immediately stops them. “Idiots,” she tells them. “The only thing you have to be afraid of is me.” Not satisfied with her scalding, she sends the girls flying into the walls with a flick of her wrist. And while the girls at the “School” soon learn to respect Fiona, who is the Supreme Witch, she warns them that they should fear a greater threat.

“You girls need to learn how to fight,” Fiona warns them as a clip shows a girl being dragged by a group dressed in black. “When witches don’t fight we burn.” The unidentified witch is then tied to a stake and burned to death. The already terrifying trailer ends on an even more ominous note, with Angela Bassett’s character, Marie Laveau seemingly enjoying the death and burning of witches, she is cackling with delight.
