Spike Lee's highly anticipated film "Oldboy" will be present at the 2013 New York Comic Con. The movie starring Josh Brolin is an English-language remake of Park Chan-wook's classic Korean thriller. Fans of the original film have been a little weary of the adaptation and this panel will probably help lose that skepticism and give Lee's version a shot. The discussion will take place this afternoon Friday, October 11 on the Main Stage 1-D starting at 6pm ET. Speakers scheduled to appear at the event include, Mark Protosevich, Michael Imperioli and Pom Klementieff. "Oldboy" is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of Joe Doucette, a man who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement, for no apparent reason," the description of the panel reads. "When he is suddenly released without explanation, he begins an obsessive mission to find out who imprisoned him, only to discover that the real mystery is why he was set free." During the session, fans will be able to watch exclusive and never-before-seen footage of the movie and an in-depth discussion with the filmmakers and talent. Brolin, the star of the movie is a little nervous of the reception this remake will get and he only made the film after Chan-wook's blessing. "I love 'Oldboy' and I’m close with Chan-wook Park and I emailed him a couple months ago, just asking for his blessing to do this movie becuase if he had said ‘No,’ I wouldnt have done it," the actor told Slash Film. "But I really respect his movie and we’ll make a little different movie and this whole idea of a more Hollywood version of it? Whatever. We’re just going to make a different version but have respect to the initial story and premise. I’m looking forward to it, man. I’m talking about it nervously right now because it makes me nervous." One of the major scenes of the original movie was the hammerfight which Brolin confirms will be kept in this new version. "Yes, by the way. Yes. And it’s a hammer and knife and all that stuff. And then will we keep the octopus, will we keep the other stuff? There’s some changes but I think it’s really good. It still makes me throw down the script half way through. Whoa."
"Oldboy" is originally inspired by a Japanese manga series written by Garon Tsuchiya about a man who after a decade of incarceration in a private prison is freed and after his release goes on a quest to find why he was kept from his liberty. A total of 8 volumes and 79 chapters were released in Japan from May 1997 to October 1998. In 2003, it was adapted into a motion picture by director Park Chan-wook and went on to be critically acclaimed internationally and winning various awards like the Grand Prix of the Jury at the 57th Cannes Film Festival.
