The neighbor of accused and convicted Cleveland Kidnapper Ariel Castro has been arrested on charges that include kidnapping, rape and murder. Elías Acevedo Sr. has been taken into custody by the authorities in Cleveland. Acevedo was first arrested in June and was officially charged Thursday with the rape and murder of Pamela Pemberton and another woman whose remains are believed to be Christian Adkins. Pemberton's strangled remains were found in 1994, she was 33 years old at the time of her death. When Adkins vanished in 1995, she was 18 years old and pregnant.
Elías Acevedo was neighbor to Ariel Castro, the man sentenced to life in prison plus one-thousand years for holding three women hostage in his home for over a decade. Castro kidnapped, raped and brutalized Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus for ten years until Berry was able to escape in May of 2013. Castro was found hanging in his jail cell on September 3, only a few weeks after beginning his sentence. After the discovery of the three Ohio women in Castro's home and his arrest, authorities in Cleveland began to look harder at missing women's cases in the area.
Acevedo was arrested in his mother's home on Seymour Avenue. The house is directly across the street from where the now demolished house belonging to Ariel Castro once stood. Acevedo was looked at as a person of interest in the Adkins and Pemberton murders after authorities began to open up old investigations in the wake of Castro's arrest. Acevedo is also charged with the rape of two young girls. In total there are 293 charges listed in the indictment against Acevedo. The 49-year-old accused rapist and murderer was brought before a Cuyahoga County judge and placed in jail on a $5 million bond.
