The award season has officially started with the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards. The 17th annual gala was held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles with an array of celebrities like Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, Jake Gyllenhaal, Harrison Ford, Octavio Spencer and many more. The Hollywood Film Awards recipients are selected by an Advisory Team comprised of a cross section of Hollywood professionals. These winners are not competing in each category, they are selected to be "honored for their body of work or film that is to be released during the calendar year." In conjunction with the awards they have also established a "Hollywood Gives Back" initiative to highlight important local and national causes. Throughout the lifetime of this ceremony, organizations that have benefited are The Art of Elysium, Artists For Human Rights, Artists For Peace and Justice and Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

One of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year is Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" and its star Sandra Bullock was the recipient of the Hollywood Actress Award. "Thank to the Hollywood Film Award. I think Hollywood has had a bad rap because the Hollywood I know is thousands and thousands of people that work tireless hours to achieve one goal, which is storytelling," Bullock said during her acceptance speech. "I see so many people in this room that I've worked with who have put me in this place today. The Hollywood I know supported an artist like Alfonso Cuarón and Jonás Cuarón to write a story that they couldn't explain, couldn't show and made no sense to anyone." Other movies that were honored were "Dallas Buyers Club" with awards to Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, an award to Julia Roberts for "August: Osage County" and a special award for a career in Hollywood for Harrison Ford.
