One game away from the organization's eighth World Series Championship, the Boston Red Sox are set to host the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 6 of the 2013 World Series. The Sox opened the series with a convincing 8-1 victory at Fenway Park that left the fans in Beantown excited about what could potentially lie down the road. Backed by a strong pitching performance from ace Jon Lester - who will teammate John Lackey take the ball in Game 6 - Boston earned a crucial early advantage that has given them a needed boost throughout the series. Despite the fact that St. Louis won Games 2 and 3, the Red Sox charged back to claim two tough games at Busch Stadium, returning home with a chance to clinch their first Fall Classic since 2007.
Though St. Louis certainly has the ability to score runs, the Cardinals have only been able to touch the plate with four runs in three series losses to the Red Sox. Up against Jon Lester for what could be the final game of the season, Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter says his team just needs to focus on finding a way to force a Game 7. "Part of it is because we've been facing really good pitching, and we have the entire postseason," Carpenter said of the Cards' offensive struggles. "But you can't make excuses. You've got to find a way to get it done. Unfortunately, in both starts against Jon, we haven't been able to figure it out. Part of that is him pitching really well, and part of it is just not making the adjustment."
Coming off back-to-back win, John Farrell's Boston Red Sox will now have two opportunities in front of the home crowd to bring the town of Boston another championship. Hoping his team is able to etch their own name in baseball lore, Farrell said he'd like one of his players to put the Sox over the top sooner rather than later.
"With no disrespect to history or to Carlton Fisk, you know, it's an iconic video and a highlight that is shown repeatedly, and one of the more memorable swings that probably has taken place in this ballpark," Farrell said. "But hopefully there's somebody Wednesday night that can wave their arms just the same."
Boston's John Lackey (0-1, 3.68 ERA 2013 World Series) will be opposed by St. Louis star Michael Wacha, a 22-year-old righty with a mind blowing postseason record of 4-0 in 2013 and a crisp 1.00 ERA.
