Silversttone demonstrated an incredible performance from reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo and the brilliant rookie Marc Marquez as the two riders faced off in an incredible qualifying battle that ultimately caused Marquez to produce a staggering lap 1.329 seconds faster than Casey Stoner's pole record in 2011. Now, Silverstone will mark the ninth front row grid start for Marc Marquez as the 20-year-old Spanish rider attempts to go for his fifth straight MotoGP win.

“I am very happy with pole position and this one carries even more value as we set a new record!” said Marquez. “The lap times were very fast, we managed an incredible lap and Jorge set the bar very high for us. We put in a better hot lap than I had expected; I hadn't anticipated riding so fast!

“The race will be tough tomorrow and we will have to remain very focused, because I think that Jorge is the strongest rival that we have here,” Marquez added. “I know Jorge pushes a lot in the first few laps. So first target is to do a good start but if I do not feel good to push I will not push. You need to warm the tyres well and try to feel confident with the bike first. Jorge was very fast at the start in Brno but this is a different track so we will see.”

Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha put down a circuit record time of 2:01.297 to destroy Casey Stoner's Silverstone record from 2011 in just his opening lap of second qualifying. Lorenzo was extremely confident that he has gained pole, but the young challenge Marc Marquez delivered an ego-crushing response when he managed to find another 0.128 from his Repsol Honda.

“It's not fantastic because we didn't make pole position. I was surprised about the improvement from the pace lap to the qualifying lap, it was a big jump, almost one second and a half,” said Lorenzo. “When I saw my lap time on my bike I thought I made pole position but when I saw the classification I saw P2 and was disappointed as I put all my effort into the lap, but it wasn't enough. “Race pace is good but we have to see where the others are tomorrow.”

The incredible performance demonstrated by Marc Marquez in his first season in the premier class has caused MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi to suggest Marc Marquez may grow to become the greatest ever MotoGP racer. Maruez won five races this season - including the last four in a row - and finished on the podium in all but one of the eleven events.

“Sincerely what Marquez is doing this year is very impressive. More than me [in 2000]. Especially his mind, because Marquez started this year for win the championship.

“In 2000, when I was a rookie, I didn't start for win the championship. I thought it was impossible in the first year. Maybe for that reason, but not just that, I don't win," Rossi reflected. “Marquez arrived already with the mind-set to try and win in the first season and sincerely I've never seen a rookie like him, in all the motorsports I know.”
