One Direction fans are still holding out hope that Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik can patch things up. However, Tommo himself indicated that the ship has already sailed on that one.

During his appearance on “The Dan Wootton Interview” podcast, Tomlinson admitted that the bond between the two ultimately fizzled after his mother Johannah Deakin's death in 2016. This involved what appears to be a broken promise.

“Truthfully, it never really got better to be honest,” the “Back To You” singer revealed. “I had a couple of calls with him after I lost me mum and, you know, all the boys had agreed to come to that performance and he didn't show and that really bugged me,” he admitted.

The rest of the One Direction members, Harry Styles, Niall Horan and Liam Payne, were all there, which he said he appreciated very much. “That was what I needed that night, that support,” Tomlinson continued. However, he said that Malik's absence kind of really showed where they stand. “I hope he is alright, but...” the singer said, not completing the thought.

Out of all the former bandmates, it was only Tomlinson and Malik who bumped heads in public. The two got in a Twitter spat back in 2015 involving DJ Naughty Boy. Last year, Malik released a song titled “Good Years,” which fans are convinced was about One Direction, specifically about the time he and Tomlinson were caught smoking joints on video.

At the moment, the boys continue to make solo music, with Tomlinson just recently releasing a new single called “Two Of Us,” which Horan even promoted on his Instagram. However, Tomlinson did tease that the band might reunite at some point. After all, 1D fans believe that if the Jonas Brothers can make new music together again, they can too.

“I would say with all certainty that we are,” Tomlinson, who is currently a judge at “The X-Factor,” said when asked about whether or not they will get back together. He did say that Malik might not be part of it. “As a five, it's a different question and it's a hard question to answer,” he cautioned.

Indeed, Malik might not be willing to be there at all. Late last year, he admitted that he no longer speaks with Horan, Styles, Payne or Tomlinson after the “snide things” they said about him, which he never expected out of them.
