Cyber Monday 2013 will take place December 2 this year, following the busy and chaotic Black Friday on November 29. The term was coined by marketing companies to promote the online shopping deals. Shop.org started the tradition in 2005 with a headline on a press release that read, "Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year." The reason this day was chosen was that research showed an uptick in online shopping activity the Monday following Thanksgiving. The sizzling day provides a quieter alternative to those people that don't want to be in the middle of the hassle that going to a brick and mortar store will cause.

Cyber Monday 2012 hit a record high in sales with a 30 percent rise in sales from the previous year, according to a report from IBM Digital Analytics. This year it is naturally expected to be bigger as bargain shoppers try to score the best deals. Due to the ease of accesibility to shop in a virtual store, people often bypass security details to they should be looking out for to avoid a scam. Always make sure you are buying from a secure site, "The first thing you want to do is look at the URL and make sure it says HTTPS," Natalie Severino, a security expert at Trend Micro, told ABC News. Most modern browsers have a visible lock icon that tells you if its a secure site. Another tip is to make sure your software is up to date to combat any new virus or trojan attacking your computer. Also, be weary of e-mail's promoting deals that are too good to be true. Some of these links lead to sites that may look like a trusted site, but might just be a mirror to collect personal information from you.

Target, Best Buy and Walmart are already previewing their online shopping sales for Cyber Monday and have set up a site promoting deals to come. In the case of Target, they will not only have Cyber Monday they will have a Cyber Week, with different deals every day beginning on December 1. Walmart has a site that promotes the December 2nd date and a "Value of the Day" page for everyday savings whil we wait for the discount bonanza. Best Buy promises to have deals and doorbusters and prompt users to sign up for their newsletter to be "the first to find out about [their] great Cyber Monday 2013 deals. The big box store will have savings on "products you want most, like select laptops, desktops and all-in-one computers, HDTVs, Blu-ray players, digital cameras, mobile phones, video games and much more. You'll also find crazy, epic, once-a-year savings and bonus deals on major and small appliances, health and fitness gear, music, movies, and more — pretty much everything you could possibly want for a joyous 2013 holiday season."
