Univision's morning show "Despierta América" will be celebrating 20 years on-air starting Monday, February 13. The co-hosts have changed over the years and the current roster includes: Karla Martinez, Alan Tacher, Satcha Pretto, William Valdés and Johnny Lozada. The celebration couldn't be complete if a reunion of the original cast members don't appear. To make this happen, personalities that currently appear on Telemundo will have to cross over and visit their former home, but it seems to be happening.
"Despierta América's" Instagram account teased the reunion of the original cast mates that include: Fernando Arau, Ana María Canseco, Neida Sandoval, Rafael José and Giselle Blondet. Although not part of the first group of hosts, Raúl González is also pictured in a separate collage of photos. "Because 'Despierta América' turns 20 years and there's no better way to celebrate than with who created it," the post reads. "Because they made history in Hispanic television and they deserve to do it again 20 years later. That is why they all return this week to the happiest home in Hispanic television."
Reunited the group of personalities again would be a great treat for viewers that want to remember the good ol' days of the show. Blondet recently returned to Univision to host "Pequeños Gigantes USA" after having signed with Telemundo a year before to host "Gran Hermano US." Arau and Rafael are not currently working in television in the U.S. What is going to create shockwaves is that Raúl is still under contract with Telemundo, although he does not have a show on-air. The real shocker is seeing Ana María Canseco on "Despierta América" as she is one of the co-hosts of "Un Nuevo Día" that run opposite each other.
In the general market, seeing celebrities appear on different television networks is not a big deal because they are open to welcome talent and cross-promote their shows. In the Latino market, if you're on one network, you cannot be seen on another, but the times are changing and we are glad to see the openness.
Years ago, when Don Francisco announced he was ending his run on "Sábado Gigante" he appeared on the Telemundo award show "Premios Tu Mundo" where he was honored. It was historical because on the opposite network, they promoted the last episode of the variety show on the rival station.
We can't miss "Despierta América" next week, but one question is still up in the air... Will Cosita be returning?
