Fans of "El Señor De Los Cielos" missing character Chema Venegas will be happy to know he will have his own show. One of Telemundo's new projects for next season is a series called "El Chema" — one of the popular characters from the hit narco novela.

Mauricio Ochmann is set to return for the spin-off. Season 5 of "El Señor De Los Cielos" starring Rafael Amaya was also commissioned and set to come back in 2017.

“El Chema,” a spin-off of the wildly popular series “El Señor de los Cielos” starring Ochmann, is the story of Chema Venegas’ first years working in Mexico’s world of organized crime and his ascension until becoming the renowned cartel leader seen in the series. Chema began committing crimes as a child, transporting marijuana in his backpack from one side of the border to the other. He worked his way up to being a hit man and then a skillful boss who left a trail of blood everywhere he went, and he eventually became one of the most wanted drug lords, always outsmarting authorities.

The story also narrates the various romantic relationships that forever marked Chema and turned him into the despicable human being he became, from his first failed relationship as a young man to his obsessive relationship with Rutila Casillas, daughter of his nemesis, Aurelio Casillas (El Señor de los Cielos).

The character of "El Chema" is loosely based on real life kingpin "El Chapo." This is how José María Venegas was described in a press release. Born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, in a hospital just across the U.S border.

The son of an American mother and a Mexican father, he grew up influenced by both cultures, as well as the paranoia and astuteness of those who make their living crossing the world’s most guarded border.

“El Chema” soon becomes a legendary figure thanks to his alliances with the capos of distribution rings in the United States, especially Randy and his white-collar clients, lawyers and financial advisors in the United States.

Everyone in New Mexico and California has heard of “El Chema,”who combines the charisma and creativity of Pablo Escobar with the low profile and strategic intelligence of Aurelio Casillas.
