Tyrion Lannister's fate will be decided by a trial by combat, which will most likely occur in episode 7, "Mockingbird." HBO

Season 4 of “Game of Thrones” has been focused on the trial of Tyrion Lannister, who was wrongly accused of poisoning his nephew and King, Joffrey Baratheon. In episode 6, “The Laws of Gods and Men” Tyrion’s trial commenced, in front of the three appointed judges, Mace Tyrell, Tywin Lannister and Oberyn Martell, the accusers were heard, however one in particular spoke louder than others—Shea. Tyrion’s former lover spoke out against him, accusing both he and Sansa Stark of plotting and poisoning the King.

The case seemed to be almost closed, with a seemingly obvious guilty verdict, after the testimony, the court took a break. Jamie sought out his father in a last attempt to save his brother from being found guilty, and ultimately beheaded. Tywin managed a meager amount of mercy for his youngest son and offered Tyrion the chance to go to the Wall, instead of being killed. But as the trial reconvened, much to Tywin Lannister’s dismay Tyrion begins to venomously dispute the murder charges against him, and instead of confessing, accuses his father and all of King’s Landing for trying him for his dwarfism, a condition that incites as much jeer in Westeros, as it does revulsion. Tyrion then stares down his father Tywin, who is very aptly seated in the Iron Throne, and demands a trial by combat.

Episode 7, “Mockingbird” will pick up with the trial, however, now fans are wondering if Tywin’s offer of exile at the Wall is still a viable option for Tyrion. While the trial was most certainly a “farce,” the trial by battle could still end badly for Tyrion if his champion loses the fight to the champion put forward by “the Crown.” Most fans are assuming that when Tyrion challenged his father so forcefully in the Throne Room, he eliminated his chances of mercy and living out the rest of his days on the Wall. But like most storylines created by George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” not everything is as it seems.

Tyrion won’t be heading to the Wall, and he won’t be getting beheaded. Tyrion’s champion is none other than Oberyn Martell, who shockingly volunteers. Oberyn is the brother of Elia Martell who married the crown price, Rhaeger Targaryen. During the sack of King’s Landing, led by Lannister forces, Elia was brutally raped and murdered at the hands of the notable Lannister bannerman, Ser Gregor Clegane, who is also known as "The Mountain." The Red Viper will take his desire for vengeance to the trial by combat and engage in a vicious fight with The Mountain, one that he unfortunately loses.

Due to Oberyn’s loss, Tyrion is found guilty and awaits his sentence of death in the Black Cells. But while he is awaiting his sentence, Jaime and Varys free Tyrion from his jail cell. Jamie not only rescues his brother, but also provides him the ability to escape from King’s Landing. Tyrion journeys across the Narrow Sea and attempts to find safety in Essos. He arrives n Pentos, under the safety of Illyrio Mopatis, who also notably housed Deanerys Targaryen and her brother before gifting her as a bride to Khal Drogo.
