When Princess Diana was interviewed by BBC’s Martin Bashir in 1997, it shocked royal family fans as she finally revealed to the public a few interesting details of the royal couple’s failed marriage. However, the interview also led to something that even Diana might not have totally expected — an infuriated Prince William, who was so angry with what his mom did.

In the 2012 biography “Prince William: Born To Be King: An Intimate Portrait,” author Penny Junor wrote that William was still a 13-year-old schoolboy at that time. In fact, he was in the study of Andrew Gailey, his master at Eton College, when Princess Diana’s BBC interview was aired.

When he heard what his mother had to say on television, he was just as shocked as everyone else. Apparently, even William had no inkling that Princess Diana agreed to be interviewed. “Not unnaturally, he was deeply upset,” Junor wrote of William.

Prince William’s reaction confirmed what Simone Simmons, Lady Di’s psychic and close friend, wrote in her book “Diana: The Last Word.” “He was furious that she hadn’t told him what she was going to do … Furious that she had spoken badly of his father, furious that she had mentioned [James] Hewitt,” she said.

Like boys his age, the young Prince William was worried that his friends might poke fun at him. He also felt at that time that his mother made a mistake and made a fool not only of herself but also of William. “He was so angry with her,” Simmons wrote. “He started shouting and crying and, when she tried to put her arms around him, he shoved her away.”

Among the shocking statements that the late Princess Diana made during the BBC interview was her admission that Prince Charles’ relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles was one of the reasons for the royal couple’s marital woes. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana said when asked by Bashir on whether Bowles was a factor in the breakdown of her marriage.

She also told BBC that Prince Charles was upset that she was getting more attention from the press. Surprisingly, she even revealed that she never saw herself becoming Queen of England one day. “I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, but I don't see myself being queen of this country,” she said.
