The majority of Americans disapproved of the way President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress have handled the humanitarian emergency of immigrant children, a survey revealed today. The results of the survey, conducted by the Washington Post and ABC television meant a political setback for the president, who has unsuccessfully sought to appear before the public as the chief promoter of immigration reform.

While 35 percent of Americans approve of how Obama has handled this new wave of immigration coming mostly from Central America, 58 percent did not approve. Although the most disapproval came for Republicans, 60 percent of those identified as independents disapproved of the president's performance, while just 37 percent of Democrats disapproved. However, negative ratings were higher for Republicans, since 66 percent of Americans disapproved of their management of his crisis.

The negative rating was higher among independents, settling at 65 percent, while 88 percent of those who identified themselves as Democrats also disapproved of the performance of these legislators. In contrast, 53 percent of Americans were in favor of the request for an emergency supplemental fund of $3.7 million made by Obama last week in response to this emergency, with 43 percent opposed. Most of these resources will be allocated to the care of immigrant children while in government custody.
