Red Bull Racing makes a big statement in Ferrari's backyard as its drivers lock out the front of the grid at Monza. In fact, reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel managed to lead practice as well as qualifying sessions 1, 2, and 3. Vettel's Q3 fast lap was 1 minute 23.755 seconds. Meanwhiel, teammate Mark Webber was 0.213 seconds behind.

“We didn't expect to be so strong here, with both cars on the front row,” Vettel said. “It's due to hard work from everyone in the team working long hours; we've had years where we've had a good car, but not a car that's competitive in low down force trim, so in that regard we did our homework. This circuit has been a bit up and down for us, but this year it's surely been more up so far!”

“A fantastic team performance to get our 50th and Sebastian's 40th pole position here in Monza,” said Red Bull team principal Horner. “We've had a strong car all weekend, but it's a track that hasn't historically been our strongest, so it's the best possible place to be starting tomorrow's race from to try and convert today's result in to a good points haul. “The weather could be a factor tomorrow and there's still a long way to go, but a really satisfying day today,” he concluded.

However, things are considerably backwards for Scuderia Ferrari. Desperate for good results at home, Ferrari gambled on a risky strategy: deploy Massa and Alonso in tandem in order to use Massa as an aero tow so that Alonso could qualify a faster time. However, Ricciardo somehow managed to get in between the two Ferraris and low down Alonso's time.

Frustrated by the circumstances, Alonso was heard on the radio saying: "C'era da farlo passare, veramente site dei geni. Mamma mia ragazzi." (should have let him by, you are truly geniuses, c'mon guys). Alonso qualifies fifth behind his teammate in fourth.
