Joaquín Hernández Galicia 'La Quina' the controversial former Pemex Union leader died Monday morning at 6am. Galicia died in a hospital in the city of Tampico, Tamaulipas. Galicia had been hospitalized for 15 days with a stomach condition prior to his death. Galicia made his last public appearance in June when he endorsed his son, Joaquín Hernández Correa's candidacy for mayor of Ciudad Madero in June. For decades Joaquín Hernández Galicia was a trade unionist and leader of the Union of Oil Workers of the Mexican Republic.
The oil union was integrated into the business structure of the organization of unions. Within this framework of unions the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) controlled how federal deputies, senators and mayors were appointed into office. This power hierarchy lasted until January 10, 1989 when Mexico's newly elected president, Carlos Salinas de Gortari ordered an end to the PRI's control over the unions. Joaquín Hernández Galicia was arrested that day in his Tamaulipas home having been charged with murder and the possessing firearms.
Joaquín Hernández Galicia 'La Quina' was sentenced to 30 years in jail but was released from jail in 1997. 'La Quina's' daughter, María Guadalupe Hernández Correa confirmed her father's death to the media. There is no information available as to when Joaquín Hernández Galicia's funeral will be held.
